Surface Plasmon Polariton Enhancement in Blue Organic Light-Emitting Diode: Role of Metallic Cathode


      Surface plasmon polariton (SPP)-enhanced blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting
diodes (OLEDs) are demonstrated by inserting a thin Ag sublayer into the electron-
transporting layer. An 18% improvement in current efficiency is achieved when the Ag
sublayer locates at a suitable position between the light-emitting layer and the metal
cathode. The improved efficiency was attributed to the effective energy transfer between
excitons and SPP in OLEDs. Both experimental facts and theoretical simulation indicate
